Thank you for your attendance at conferences last month. The partnership between home and school helps our students so very much. And a very special thanks to all of the room parents and volunteers for making our parties so special this year!

This month we will be finishing up the chapter on place value. Then we will start to learn how to order and compare numbers, and even start to learn number patterns! The math might be becoming more difficult for your first grader, so it will be very important for you to review concepts that your child struggles with. Even if your child doesn’t struggle with these new concepts, it would be a good idea to review even just one or two problems from a math worksheet each day.   This month in reading we will be focusing on the long e sound

spelled ‘ea’ like the word pea, the long o sound spelled ‘oa’ and ‘ow’ like the words tow and boat, and the long i sound spelled ‘ie’ and ‘igh’ like the words light and tie. We will also continue to be working on story elements such as theme and what makes a story realism or fantasy.

Keep reading to and with your child every night. Don’t forget to read ‘just for fun’, too! Speaking of fun…the “FAMILY TIMES” booklet that comes home on Mondays is a great way to reinforce the skills we are learning in reading. Even if you don’t have time to do the daily suggestions (located on the back of the Family Times), you can have fun with the game in the middle of the booklet. It only takes about five or ten minutes!

As many of you have noticed, there is a short sentence with every set of spelling words. It is not only important to practice the spelling words, but also the sentence. When we grade the sentence, we are looking at the spelling of the words and proper capitalization and punctuation. Sometimes your child might struggle more with the sentence than the words. We know you might get tired of hearing “Practice, Practice, Practice”, but it really does make a difference!

A big “THANK YOU” to those of you who donated items towards our First Grade Basket Raffle! We could not have done it without you! As always, please feel free to e-mail or call us with any questions you might have. Thanks for all you do!
