and have the sheet signed by a parent/guardian.
Step 3:  Phone Call Home
Step 4:  Meeting with Principal

* Depending on the severity of the behavior, a child may be referred to the principal upon the first offense according to our bullying and harassment policies.

Star of the Week
Any student who does not lose points will receive a star ticket each day.  These tickets are to be filled out with the student’s name and placed in the star bucket for a Friday drawing.  Tickets can also be given out for right answers, helpfulness, and being caught doing good!  The winner of the drawing is the Star of the Week and receives a goodie bag from Mrs. Scott.

Team Points
Students are seated in teams.  Teams earn sticks for following directions, cooperation, working quietly, etc.  On Fridays, we count sticks.  The team with the most sticks is the team of the week and may draw from the prize box.

Mrs. Scott’s Marble Jar
Students may earn marbles from Mrs. Scott’s jar into the class jar by exhibiting good class behavior in and out of the room.  Marbles can be earned for receiving compliments in the hall, quiet restroom breaks, compliments from specials classes, and positive lunch notes.  When all the marbles have been earned, a class reward will be given.

Class Policies

The following is some general information about class policies. Changes for second semester are noted in red.

Policy Change!
With a quarter of third grade now complete, students are learning to be more and more responsible with their school work.  Mrs. Frame and I have been very pleased at how well the students have adapted to switching classes for Reading and Math.  With that being said, we are now implementing a new policy in regards to no name papers and late work.

No Name Papers and Late Work
Papers that are missing a name will be deducted one point per assignment.  We will be deducting 10% per day on late papers.  This will be the policy for both Reading and Math. Because accidents do happen, each child will be given an “oops” to be used this 9 weeks.

Additional Supplies
Because of our unique teaming situation, I am asking that your child bring a 1 inch or 1 ½ inch 3 ring binder to be used for math.  The kind with the pockets on the inside front and back cover work best.  A zippered pencil pouch may also be helpful for taking supplies between classes.

Agenda Books
Students will fill out their agendas and bring them home each afternoon.  I spend time each day going over assignments.  Students will mark assignments with an HW if it is homework that needs to be completed and with a check if it has been completed in class.  The agenda book should be signed by a parent or guardian each day. This is a great communication tool between home and school.

Homework & Late Assignments
Homework is work not finished during class time.  If students make good use of their class time, they should have no more than 30 minutes of homework each night.  This 30 minutes may include reading the weekly story from the textbook, practicing spelling words, reading a library book, or practicing math facts.

Take Home Papers
Students will bring home their graded work on Mondays in a blue “Take Home” folder.  Please watch for this each Monday.

Corrections
Homework is a practice opportunity for students, and therefore they may correct any daily assignment with a grade of less than 70%.  The new corrected score and the previous score will be averaged together for the student's new grade on the assignment.

Birthdays
Each student may bring birthday treats to share on or near his or her birthday.  Because of the carpet in the classroom, please no drinks.  Summer birthdays may celebrate on or near their 1/2 birthday (6 months from their birthday).

Water Bottles & Snacks
Your child may bring a water bottle to school each day.  Please make sure it has a lid or spout to prevent spills.  I do ask that the children take these bottles home so that they can be washed.

We eat a very early lunch (11:25 – 11:45) students are allowed to bring a healthy snack to be eaten in the afternoon as long as it is not a distraction during instruction.  It is helpful if these snacks are individually packaged, in a baggie, or sealed container.

Alternate Snacks
If your child has a food allergy, you may wish to send a few nonperishable snacks to be kept in the classroom in the event that a class treat is brought in that your child is unable to eat.

A Bit About Me
Teaching has always been a passion of mine.  My mother still tells the story that when I would come home from Kindergarten I would spend the rest of the day teaching my little sister, even making her line up for dinner!  I grew up in Winfield, Kansas tutoring other students throughout my middle and high school career.  I received my teaching degree from Emporia State in 2000 and my master’s degree from Baker University in 2004.  This is my eighth year teaching in the Goddard district and my fifth year as a third grade teacher.

My husband, Andy, and I have been married for four years.  We have a sixteen month old daughter, Karaline.  As a family we enjoy spending time with our extended family in Winfield and Sarasota, Florida.  In my spare time, I enjoy reading, baking, and scrapbooking pictures of Karaline.

I look forward to working together to help your child have the best school year possible!  Please do not hesitate to contact me here at school 794 - 4260 or e-mail me at  kscott@goddardusd.com.

A Math Message from Mrs. Scott
Dear Families,

This year Mrs. Frame and I will be teaming, so I will be providing your child’s math instruction.  Mrs. Frame’s class will meet in my room each day from 10:10 – 11:15 and may receive additional help during study hall time Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday 3:30 – 3:50.
Class Policies:

Corrections
Students may correct daily work with a grade of less than 70%.  The new corrected score and the previous score will be averaged together for the student's new grade on the assignment.

Homework & Late Assignments
If a student does not have enough time to finish an assignment, he/she will be required to take it home to complete it. Students who do not have their assignments for class will be expected to finish it during Study Hall (Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday) or Activity Time (Friday).

I look forward to working together to help your child have the best school year possible!  Please do not hesitate to contact me here at school 794 - 4260 or kscott@goddardusd.com.

Our grammar focus this month will be on adjectives and adverbs.  We will practice writing using lots of lively adverbs and adjectives as we focus on Voice and Word Choice in our writing.  We will be writing stories from the point of view of ants as we read the story Two Bad Ants.

Cursive:
Students should be writing in cursive when writing in lowercase.  This month we will be writing cursive in reading, math,   language, and social studies!  We will be filling our agendas out in cursive. As students learn the uppercase letter of their first name, they should be writing their names in cursive!

Social Studies:
Congratulations to our class president and our class vice president.  We had a fun filled class election.   It was fun to see democracy in action!  This month, we will continue to learn about our government.  To coordinate with our reading story about the Statue of Liberty, we will be learning more about the statue and Ellis Island.

As always, if you have questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me here at school 794 - 4260 or e-mail me at kscott@goddardusd.com.
