Third Grade Teacher

T.E.A.M. =Together Everyone Achieves Miracles!

Contact Information
I want to welcome you and your child to a great year in third grade.  You will see amazing changes in your child as they grow and mature throughout the year.  Third grade is filled with many new challenges.  Together, we will help your child be successful. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions you may have along the way.  I feel it is extremely important to keep those lines of communication open at all times. You can always reach me at school (794-4260) or on my cell phone (993-2122). Please don’t hesitate to call.

Teaming with Mrs. Scott
This year Mrs. Scott and I are team teaching together for reading and math.  Mrs. Scott will teach my class math, and I will teach her class reading.  If you ever have any questions about her math class, please feel free to reach her via email.  Her email address is as follows. kscott@goddardusd.com

Mrs. Scott and I have similar personalities and teaching styles, so this should be an easy transition for all of the students. I think your child will really enjoy both of our classrooms!

Agenda Books:
Students will be required to take home their agenda books daily. Please sign it each evening and have your child return it the following school day.  The purpose of the agenda book is to teach the students how to self-monitor the homework assignments they may have acquired throughout the day.  This will be a work in progress for our third grade students.

Weekly Folders:
The students will have folders they take back and forth each day.  These folders will contain notes from the office or PTO, homework, and any graded papers.  Please take time every evening to check your child’s folder.  I will send graded papers home on Mondays or Fridays depending on the activities of the week.  Please look at all of the graded papers and discuss problems missed. Don’t hesitate to let me know if you think your child may need some extra help or support on a particular skill.

Monday Night Read Slips and Flash Card Practice:
Every Monday the students will be bringing home their weekly reading story. Please have your child read this story aloud to you, sign the reading slip, and return it to me by Wednesday. If there is a short week or your child is absent, he/she will always have two nights to read the story. This will count as a weekly participation grade.  If the reading slip is not returned by Wednesday, your child will need to complete the assignment during study hall/ activity time.

Many weeks, Mrs. Scott will require the students to practice their math flash cards.  She will send a flashcard slip home on Monday and require it to be signed and returned by Friday.  The students need to practice their math facts two times during the week for at least a ten minute period each time.  Study hall period will be used to complete the assignment on Friday if a child has forgotten to return their slip.

Homework:
If a student does not have enough time to finish an assignment, he/she will be required to take it home to complete it.  (Mrs. Scott and I try to allow plenty of time for students to complete their daily work in class.)  Students who do not have their assignments the following school day will be expected to finish it during study hall/ activity time.

Birthdays:
Because time is limited, we may have to celebrate birthdays at varied times depending on the day.  Please feel free to send birthday treats with your child in the morning, and we will make sure we find time throughout the day to celebrate.  If your child has a summer birthday, they may decide to celebrate their half birthday, or they can bring their items in August or May.  Ms. Wood has requested that parents NOT bring drinks along with birthday treats.  Our carpets have taken quite a toll over the past few years from sweetened, colored drinks.

Snacks in the Classroom:
We will be eating third lunch this year.  Our lunchtime is from 12:40-1:05. I am allowing the kids to bring their own snack as long as it does not interfere with our learning.  Please do not send candy or anything messy. The students may also bring a pop-up or twist-up water bottle each day.  I encourage them to take it home nightly for cleaning.

Behavior system:
I run my classroom as if we were a family or a team.  The kids will learn how to respect one another and problem solve together.  If a child should need correction and help, I will first give a verbal reminder.  If the student is not following classroom procedures at that time, I will then ask the student to talk with me and fill out a “Think Sheet”. The “Think Sheet” will require the student to write about the situation and state what he/she will do differently next time.  I will ask the student to have you, the parent, sign this form and return it the following school day. In some cases, a loss of activity time or thinking lap may also be necessary.  If any further problems occur, I will contact you that evening to discuss the matter. I do make sure to reward students as individuals-- mostly by giving them praise.  I make sure they know how much I appreciate their good behavior! At times, I give out periodic trips to the prize box as an additional “thank you”.

Team rewards may be given to those teams who exhibit exceptional behavior.  These rewards may vary.  In the past, I’ve had teams invite a special friend to eat lunch with them in the classroom
For whole class rewards I offer an after school marble jar party.  Once the marble jar has been filled for overall good classroom behavior, the class is awarded an after school thematic party. For the past several years, I have even held an end of the year, over night “lock in”.  The kids usually really look forward to this! They work hard to earn these parties.

My Expectations: I want the students to learn how to be responsible young people.  I am a very caring person who wants to see your child succeed, and I will do everything in my power to make that happen.  This is going to be a great school year!  Please remember to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Research shows that kids should do 10 minutes of homework per grade level each evening.  Example: 3rd grade = 30 minutes per day. Suggested Homework Schedule:
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
Read and discuss the weekly story. Parents, please sign their reading slips when they are finished reading. Practice math facts for 10 minutes and read for the other 20 minutes Practice the weekly spelling list for 10 minutes, work on math facts for 10 minutes, and read for the remaining 10. Practice spelling words for 10 minutes and read for 20 minutes. Pick a chapter book. No Homework. RELAX!
