Reading is the most important skill your
child will learn. Reading to and with your child needs to be a daily occurrence
in your home. Your child also needs to time to read independently. One
way to encourage reading is to help your child create a personal library.
Use book shelves, baskets, crates or plastic tubs to hold your child's
treasures. Books do not have to be new. Garage sales, school book orders,
and take home stories from your child's classroom are an excellent
resource. Visit the public library often to keep a supply of unfamiliar
stories in your child's hands. Encourage friends and family to make books
part of their gift giving to your child. The number of number of books
in your home and the amount of reading done daily is directly related to
higher achievement.
