Nurse | Counselor

Leslie Greenwood, R.N.
I will be instructing the seventh grade students
in human sexuality during the month of April and
May. Instruction will take place through their science
class and notification through Skyward will be
sent to parents of those students involved. This curriculum
is a State mandate, but allows you to sign a
paper if you wish to opt your student out of this instruction.
This paper will be available on Skyward. I
will have the complete program available for review
in the library if you wish to view it. It is not available
for checkout.
Students who will need any immunizations for
the next school year according to the State of Kansas
will receive notification through the mail and
will be required to have written proof of this immunization
by the first day of the next school year. All
students in seventh through tenth grades will require
a Tdap shot if there is no history of receiving
this shot. Two doses of the Varicella (Chicken Pox)
shot will be required for those students entering
seventh and eighth grade. If your student has had
the Chicken Pox disease, they are exempt from this
shot requirement and I require a note from the doctor
stating the student has had this disease.
Summer is a great time to get these shots as
students are getting their sports physicals for the
upcoming school year activities and requires no
time away from school. If your student does not
have this immunization by October 1, 2012 they will
be excluded from attending school until this is taken
care of.

A Star in the Apple
From the book "Home with a Heart" by Dr. James Dobson
Some parents refer to their children as the "apple of their eye." One Mom I know, affectionately
thinks of her kids as the "star" in the apple.
This mother discovered one day that by cutting
an apple horizontally across the middle, instead of
coring and slicing it in wedges from top to bottom,
that something new and striking appeared. A perfect
five-point star was formed by the tiny seeds at the
center. The star had been there all along, of course,
but she'd just never seen it before because she
always approached the apple from the same point of
view.
There's an analogy to children here that intrigues
me. Most of us look at the creatures we call
kids in a certain way year after year. We see them
perhaps as lazy or irritating or demanding. But
children are infinitely complex, and we may be overlooking
qualities of character that we've never seen
before. We could be missing the "star" at the heart
of these young lives.
If we try to see them through fresh eyes every
now and then, we may stumble onto a whole new
wonderful dimension to their personalities that
escaped us before. So give it a try! Begin looking at
your children from a different angle. There is, I promise,
a star tucked away inside every boy and girl.
Just a closing thought as we head into summer.
Take some time to spend with your kids. You may
see something in your "stars" that you haven't seen
before and be pleasantly surprised.
