an enrollment packet and sign up for kindergarten screening that will be held May 7-9.

Immunization Requirements are Changing
The State of Kansas has mandated some changes in immunization requirements effective with the 2008-09 school year.  The new requirements will affect kindergarten through 5th grade students. (Please see IMPORTANT NOTE below.)

According to the new state guidelines, all Kansas students, kindergarten through 5th grade, will be required to have completed the Hepatitis B Series (3 doses) and have at least one dose of Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine.  Written documentation from either doctor or parent/guardian of prior Varicella disease will be sufficient in place of the immunization.  The documentation of Varicella disease will require month and year of disease.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Hepatitis B and Varicella requirements for schools are being phased in due to vaccine funding and availability considerations.  Additional grades will be added each school year until students of all ages are included.  As changes to the immunization requirements are announced by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, we will keep you informed.
If you have questions or concerns about the new requirements, please contact Leslie Greenwood Eisenhower Middle School nurse at 794-4150.

Grade Reports by Mail
The teachers at EMS have the ability to email progress reports straight from their gradebooks. They look like and contain the same information as the printed versions you may have seen. If you are interested in receiving reports by email, please contact your child’s teacher, preferably by email, with your request to be added to their list and your email address(s). You can find all the teachers’ email addresses by clicking here and then the teacher’s name. Most email addresses follow the same format: firstinitiallastname@goddardusd.com.

Report of Absence
Any time that your student is absent, PLEASE CALL THE FRONT OFFICE in the morning to report the absence at 794-4150. Our voice mail is on 24 hours a day. Please state the reason for the absence.

Change of Address/Telephone
Please be sure to call Mrs. Gerken at 794-4139 with all changes and/or additions to your address, telephone numbers, extra mailings, etc. so that we may keep our files current. Thank you.

InTouch
Do you want to know what your student received on that social studies test? Or how about the quiz in math? A great way to keep up with your student’s progress at school is our Internet reporting system called InTouch. With a password you can get from the office, you can log into the system and check the grade in each of the classes for which your student is enrolled.

The math classes have finished the state assessments. Students worked hard and we anticipate some great results. We are diving into working with integers and will be working on probability as well. We are hoping for a strong finish. Help us keep your student focused.

English will wrap up the year with short stories reviewing theme and setting. Classes will also work on a newspaper project which must include fiction and non-fiction articles plus miscellaneous items such as a weather report, pictures with captions, and a comic strip. The entire space of the newspaper should be used. We have truly enjoyed teaching this seventh grade class. They’ve been challenged throughout the year in new ways and have stepped up to meet the challenges. We wish them all the best in the eighth grade.

Science classes have finished the state assessments. This is the first year for this test. We will find out how well we did in the fall. We are hoping for some great results! We will finish the unit on Ecology during the next few weeks.

From the Indian Removal Act of 1830 to the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s, and from Clyde Cessna to the Boeing Company in Wichita; the last month of the year, students will delve into the great history of Kansas and will complete a project highlighting important events in the history of our great state.

Thanks to all the parents and students who have helped make the science classroom so successful this year. It is hard to believe that we have already covered the following topics: Science Basic Skills, Earth Science, Space Science, Chemistry and Genetics. It has truly been a great year.

The eighth graders will take the state social studies assessment on May 1-2. Please encourage your student to do his/her best on this test.

The social studies classes will finish the year watching an educationally edited version of the film, “Glory.” It is a very good movie about the 54th Massachusetts Regiment during the Civil War.
In Mr. Campa’s Math 8 Plus, the students completed Chapter 11, Rational Equations and Functions. Continuing with Chapter 12, Radicals and Connections to Geometry, students will investigate and graph square-root functions, simplify expressions involving radicals, and will solve radical equations by factoring, using the quadratic formul, or by completing the square.
In Mr. Campa’s and Mr. Campbell’s Math 8 classes, students completed Chapter 12, Polynomials and Nonlinear Functions. Continuing with Chapter 13, Angle Relationships and Transformations, we will identify and find measures of complementary, supplementary, and vertical angles. Students will identify angles formed when a transversal intersects two lines. Finally, students will translate, rotate, dilate, and reflect figures in a coordinate plane.

All students will be completing a power point project titled, “How Do I Use Math in My Everyday Life?”

English classes will finish the year by reading the historical fiction novel, “In My Father’s House.” It takes place during the Civil War and ties in nicely with the students’ social studies classes.
As a team, we have truly enjoyed working with this eighth grade class and wish them luck as they go on to the high school!
