As we enter the fourth nine weeks many of our students are beginning to get very busy with a variety of spring and summer activities. Our students are participating in summer baseball and softball programs, as well as other outdoor activities. As students do get busier, some times their school work takes a back seat to other activities that they are participating in. I would encourage you to continue to monitor your child’s daily classroom assignments so that they finish the year on a positive note. This is especially true for our sixth grade students. A weak performance during the last nine weeks can impact their eligibility for fall sports and other activities that they will have the opportunity to take part in while attending Goddard Middle School.
During the month of March our fifth and sixth grade students completed the Kansas State Reading Assessment. Our students and staff worked very hard to do their best on this assessment and we are anxiously awaiting our results. By the time that you receive the April newsletter we will be in the process of administering the Kansas State Math Assessment. The assessment will be given during the weeks of April 1-3 and April 8-10. Once again we ask that you assist us by making sure that your child comes to school everyday on time, and eats a nutritious breakfast each morning. As simple as this might seem it really does help our students stay focused and perform up to their capabilities on assessments. We really appreciate all of your help in these areas!
The Challenger Book Club began meeting after school each Monday during the month of March. We have had an excellent participation in the book club with over 90 kids attending each week. During March we read the book On My Honor by Marion Dane Bauer. Our students really seemed to enjoy reading and discussing this short novel. I would like to thank the following staff members for volunteering their time to help with the book club during March: Megan Alexander, Vanessa Dondlinger, Sharlotte Fluty, Calli Grater-Combs, Sue Hansen, Selena Hopkins, Nancy O’Neal, Monty Wellner, and Marsh Wells. During the months of April and May we will once again be meeting after school each Monday to discuss our new novel, Island of the Blue Dolphin. This book details the life of a young girl that was accidentally left behind by her tribe and how she survived this experience. We look forward to reading and discussing this story with our students.
April and May are two extremely busy months at Challenger Intermediate School. We have many fun and exciting events planned for our students. Please continue to check our monthly calendar for dates and times for these upcoming activities.
Sincerely,
Jeff Hersh
