5th Grade News

Your students are working hard to prepare for the spring State Assessments
(Reading March 6-8; Math April 3-5). You can help them prepare in several
ways:

  • Check their agendas daily for learning topics and homework.
  • Discuss Thursday Progress Reports with your child.
  • Restock school supplies. Many students need pencils and binders.
  • Discuss how you use math and reading on a daily basis.
  • Come to conferences on February 21, 22, or 23. Call the office (794-4040) to set an appointment.

We appreciate your help and support throughout this year.

6th Grade News

It is hard to believe it is already February, and we are working hard getting ready for state assessments. The Reading state assessment will be March 6th—8th.

Conferences are quickly approaching and we encourage calling and scheduling your conference prior to conference week. Conferences will be held February 21—23.

Please remind students to dress appropriately as winter continues. We will go out to recess unless the wind-chill is less than 25 degrees.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING CHALLENGER/DISCOVERY AND CLARK DAVIDSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ZONES

Effective NOW, the school zones on Walnut Street in front of Challenger/Discovery Intermediate and Clark Davidson Elementary are being combined into ONE – 20 MILE PER HOUR - SCHOOL ZONE.  Beginning at Third and Walnut Streets, all the way south to Richard Road – just south of Clark Davidson Elementary – will now be 20 MPH during the following times on school days:

   7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.              12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.           2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Please remember that there are no flashing yellow lights to warn driver’s they are in a school zone.  The above times are posted directly underneath the 20 MPH School Zone Signs and it is each driver’s responsibility to obey the 20 MPH limit during those time periods.  The City of Goddard treats School Zones just like Construction Zones, whereby the fines are DOUBLED.  Please be careful.

Reminders

Inclement Weather Plan
With cooler weather on the horizon, we encourage all families to formulate alternative plans for students in case weather should force the early cancellation of school. If students know what to do ahead of time, it reduces the stress of last minute planning both for the students and parents.

Attendance
An absence/tardy is unexcused without a valid excuse. The principal shall be responsible for determining the validity of offered excuses for absences/tardies from school. Unexcused absences/tardies may result in disciplinary action appropriate to each grade level which includes, but is not limited to, detention, in-school suspension, or Saturday School. Unexcused absences/tardies may also result in a student being reported to appropriate authorities. Students with excessive absences/tardies may be required to provide additional documentation.

Administrators will communicate with parents to insure every effort is made to encourage regular school attendance by all students. Letters will be mailed, per compulsory school attendance law, when students receive three (3) consecutive unexcused absences or five (5) unexcused absences in a semester or seven (7) unexcused absences in a school year (see JBD-R and JBE). In addition, a letter will be mailed when any student accumulates ten (10) or more absences, excused or unexcused, in one semester.

Field Trips
No student will be allowed to leave the building on a field study trip without a signed permission slip on file. These slips must be on file the day before the trip. No phone calls or faxes will be accepted. Students will not be allowed to call home. Student must ride the bus to and from the field trip.
