Band
Melanie Caster and Sarah Ashcraft, Band Director

Congratulations to our 5th and 6th Challenger and Discovery Band students for a wonderful concert; the student’s behaved very well and played musically! We appreciate everyone’s willingness to work with us for our rescheduled concert due to the snow day.

We are progressing through the book quickly now, and still requiring 100 minutes of home practice time. For extra help, we are available Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings before school at 7 a.m., and after school until 3:25 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday only. Please encourage your student to practice, give a concert, or record him or herself if practicing becomes mundane. Practicing together in two or more is also a way to have fun while doing homework!

The 5th graders have learned the B-flat concert scale and are now working on the E-flat concert scale. They are also learning more notes, different time signatures, and more music symbols. If you are not hearing your student practice, please encourage them! We do not want any students to fall behind.

The 6th graders are still working on memorizing the concert A-flat scale (they already know B-flat, C and F). They are working on our final concert songs, as well as progressing through Essential Elements book 2 in preparation for middle school. Please talk with your student about continuing their music/band education in the Goddard Public Schools. The more students we have, the more fun it is!

Please mark your calendars for Thursday, May 6th for our final band concert in the GHS gymnasium at 7 p.m. This concert’s theme is one darkness and suspense: “Things that go bump in the night!” Challenger and Discovery will combine (all 5th and 6th) to play two familiar crowd-pleasing songs. RGMS and EMS will play as a combined group, as will all of the GHS students. Finally, all students will play one piece together (over 1,000 students will be playing simultaneously!) to finish the concert. Please plan on joining us to close the year and arrive early for a seat!

The orchestra students are working hard at preparing for the spring concert. Our spring concert will be held in the auditorium of Goddard High School on March 23, 2010. The concert will begin at 7:00 P.M., but all students should plan on arriving no later than 6:15 P.M. so that we can tune and warm up. All students should plan on dressing in the following attire for this performance:

  • Girls: White dress top, black skirt or pants, black dress shoes
  • Boys: White dress shirt with a dark colored tie (not bow tie), black pants, black dress shoes.

We will conduct a dress rehearsal in the bandroom at Challenger. Mrs. Ashcraft and Ms. Cromwell have graciously suggested that we trade rooms for a day. Finally, please invite your family, friends, and neighbors to the concert. These students have worked hard, and we are looking forward to delivering the very best performance yet!

HOOPS 4 HEART a HUGE SUCCESS!

Thank you CHALLENGER students and parents for making our Hoops 4 Heart event a huge success again this year. Students enjoyed playing some team shooting games and learning about the game of basketball. Donations are still coming in, but at last count, Challenger students collected around $3,000 for the American Heart Association. WOW! I am very proud to be a teacher at Challenger Intermediate School because the Challenger students do a great job of giving back to their community and being of service. A final total will be published in the April newsletter.

COMING ATTRACTIONS: Students will have fun learning about the sport of bowling by using some NEW bowling equipment. During the two week unit, students will learn the vocabulary, proper etiquette and scoring of the sport. Students will also continue to work on their fitness skills such as push-ups, sit-ups and cardiovascular endurance. Many students are improving on the number laps they complete on “100 Lap Club” day. Ask your child how many laps they have completed so far this year!

FITNESS GRAM: Spring FITNESS GRAM testing is scheduled sometime after spring break and early April. Students will participate in the PACER test, push-up test and possible sit-up test if time allows. It is in the plans for the sixth graders to run a timed mile on the track sometime in late April weather permitting. If your child is unable to participate in the testing due to illness or injury, then a written assignment will be given so they can earn their participation points.

Keep collecting and saving Box Tops labels, Tyson Chicken labels and Campbell’s Soup labels. Winners of the February contest will be announced in the April newsletter.

PLAYING IT SAFE: Thank you for helping your students be prepared for physical education class. Tennis shoes provide for a SAFE and FUN time while moving in the gym. Furthermore, if your child should not participate due to injury or illness, please send a note to excuse him/her from class. Thank You!

I enjoy working with your child and teaching them the skills they need now and for a lifetime.

This month, science will be a fun and exciting for 5th and 6th graders. Fifth grade will be finishing up their study on volcanoes…whew! That was one hot topic! We will be beginning the study of energy, work, and simple machines very soon. Sixth grade will be into forces, motion, friction, gravity, and Newton’s laws. These units are sure to be full of activity!

The science department would like to thank all the parents who came for parent-teacher conferences. We appreciate the chance to discuss your child’s progress in science.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Vocal Music
Monica Cromwell, Vocal Music

2010 is off to a smooth start for Challenger musicians. Both grades have worked on some creative writing projects to connect other curricular areas with music. Fifth grade students wrote stories using varying musical selections to shape the plot. The stories were creative and funny. The fifth grade students have also had a sneak peak at some of the songs for their upcoming vocal concert. Please mark your calendars now for their program on Tuesday, April 27.

The Sixth grade writing project involves composing and performing a song. We are combining social studies, language arts and technology in the compositions. The songs are inspired by pop culture and world events from their lifetime. At the conclusion of the project, each solo artist or group will perform the song with a technology presentation. This may be in the form of a PowerPoint or music video. The composers are working hard and have some really fun projects. I will be sure to include some of their lyrics in next month’s newsletter.
Thanks for sending your best!
