Principal Hotline
The principal's hotline is from staff members wanting to recognize students for excellence in academics and/or behavior. After receiving nominations, Ms. Wood makes a phone call home and a certificate is placed on the "Awesome Student" bulletin board in the front foyer.

Announcements:

Effective December 1, any change in your child’s daily bus routine must be verified in writing from the child’s parent/guardian before school starts for the day.  Written notice must be given to the office if the child is to be picked up that day instead of riding the bus home.  For the safety of your child, we will no longer honor telephone calls to change a child’s school bus routine unless it is an emergency.

We had a lot of fun learning in the month of February. We were delighted to see the turn out for the Valentine Parties. The children are learning more everyday and we are seeing a lot of progress. It was nice to talk the parents during parent-teacher conferences. This month we will be learning about Easter and Spring. We will also be reading some books by Dr. Seuss.

A big “THANK YOU” to all the parents for attending conferences! We love sharing your child’s kindergarten success with you. We only have three more months with our students to prepare them for first grade, and we appreciate all the encouragement at home.

In March, we will be learning about measurement and numbers greater than 20. With measurement, we will be using non-standard units of measure such as measuring things with blocks, paper clips, markers, etc. We will use the terms longer than, shorter than, and learn that we also measure things by weight and capacity. Continue to work on telling time to the hour, money, and numbers 0-20: write, recognize, and count, as well as number order.

In reading, we will be learning the letters/sounds of J, W, X, and U, as well as our sight words: yellow, blue, green, what, said, and was. Continue to practice the sounds of all the letters we have learned so far, blend letters and their sounds into words, write short sentences, and work hard on memorizing the sight words they need to know by first grade.

Celebrations this month include Dr. Seuss’ birthday and St. Patrick’s Day. We wish you a happy, fun, and relaxing Spring Break, the 17th-21st!

Wow! We are near the end of the Third-Nine Weeks Grading Period and hopefully better weather. Thank you parents for coming to your child’s conference time to visit with their teachers about their progress in school.

We would like to take a minute to thank the parents, grandparents, and helpers that came out to help prepare the tables in the making of our Bread for Kansas Day. They had to cover the tables, distribute the kits, oversee the assembly of the ingredients, make sure the children listened to the instructions, clean up, and wait for the bread to bake and get it to the children. We couldn’t have done it without you! Thank You! Thank You!?

Children, we loved the Music Program and you were great! The children practiced and performed well and were excited to see their families watch the cute “BUGZ” Musical. Thank you to Mrs. Moffitt for her leadership expertise with the children, it was a success!

Also, this month we will be going to the Underground Salt Mine Museum in Hutchison. Don’t forget to send only WATER for drinks and ALL items MUST be disposable; no lunchboxes will be allowed down in the Underground Salt Mine Museum.

Congratulations to the children that have won their T-Shirt for reaching their reading goal. Children keep reading, reading, reading! Parents, thanks for your home support with your child; it makes a difference at school.

Grade 3 News...
Mrs. Bond, Mrs. Frame, Mrs. Kress, Mrs. Scott

February has been a very busy month for our wonderful third graders, full of new learning opportunities, field trips, parties and the book fair. Our time together is flying by so quickly with so many activities to keep us on our toes! What would February be without Valentine’s Day? The students all enjoyed their final classroom party. Thank you to our amazing room parents for all of their hard work and organization efforts which have made all of the third graders’ parties unforgettable. Thank you also to all of the parents who were able to help out in other ways by attending and or sending items for the party. Your generosity is very much appreciated!

Our third graders also enjoyed their trip to the bowling alley at Cheney this month. What a fun opportunity this was for students to practice various math skills during and after their trip. They practiced bowling in physical education with Mr. Zimmerman last month, and they were so proud to show off their abilities. What a great time it was! Thank you to all of the parents who were able to attend Parent Teacher Conferences. It is always so helpful to meet with you and discuss your child’s progress. We appreciate your support during this demanding academic year and in helping to make sure your child is well prepared for 4th grade!

The third grade would also like to thank Mrs. Wagner for making our CDS book fair so fun for our students and staff. The kids were all excited to visit the book fair and participate in the many fun activities Mrs. Wagner and Mrs. Haynie organized during the book fair. We are so lucky to have such an energetic and creative library staff that works so hard to get our kids excited about reading!

Finally, the students have all been working very hard to prepare for the state reading assessment during the first two weeks of March and the state math assessment during the first and second week of April. Thank you so much, parents, for your help at home in making sure your child is present, rested and well fed during these upcoming testing days. Please look for a note from your child’s teacher with specific dates and times for your child’s state assessments. We feel confident that all of the students will make us proud and use their best efforts during these assessments so that they can enjoy a skating field trip later in the year! Don’t forget to ask your child each day of testing if he or she earned a star on their “Best Effort Button” that day. Students can earn a best effort star each day by working carefully, using scratch paper on the math test, and utilizing all of the good test taking strategies we have been practicing.

Fourth graders are very busy preparing for the Kansas Reading Assessment. The fourth grade students will be taking the reading test between March 3rd - 10th. After spring break we will review for one week and then begin the Kansas Math Assessment, March 31st – April 8th. Please make every effort to see that your child is here during testing. Make sure your child has a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast before coming to school on those testing weeks.

Thank you for the many contributions toward making our final school party such a success. The students had a wonderful time with the many treats and activities at the Valentine Party. Thank you room parents for a well organized year, and for your time and commitment to each class party.

Thank you again parents for your active role in attending conferences and helping your child with their schoolwork. Your support truly helps them succeed.
