Principal's Principles

The Principal’s Principles...
I cannot believe that the end of the school year is very near. We have completed the State Assessments for the Intermediate grades. The State Assessments are part of our curriculum. A few years ago, the State of Kansas did for its teachers a great service by gathering educators across the State and determining what your child should learn at each grade level. This was a huge benefit for teachers to know exactly what is expected at a certain grade level when they are looking at curriculum material to be used to deliver instruction to our students. In the past, the State said that by the end of the 3rd grade, your student should know these skills; however, schools were not consistent across the State. It is better for your child when we can communicate exactly what he/she needs to know by each grade; furthermore, when one year builds upon the other, your child will be better prepared for graduation at grade twelve. The State Assessments are used to measure your child’s knowledge in certain curriculum areas.

I would like to make parents aware that we are seeing a large number of tardies from our students. This is and can be very frustrating to your child as well as for our teachers. It only harms your child to walk into class late. It isn’t fair to your child nor is it fair to the others in the classroom for instruction to be interrupted. We are looking into various consequences that will be implemented this upcoming school year for excessive tardies. Essentially, Discovery is a building of students transported to school by the district’s buses; thus, our students should be entering school with enough time to get to their locker and prepare for the day without delay.

On a brighter note, our students did very well on our State Assessments. Preliminary results show that a very large percentage of students “met standards” or above in both reading and math. To reward our students for a job well done, we will take our students to a movie. On May 19th Discovery will see the new Narnia movie at the Warren Theatre on West 21st Street.

Lastly, I wish all of you a safe summer. Please have your child read, do some math, and exercise the brain during the summer vacation. It will go fast and August will be here before we know it. There are some great learning websites available to extend learning and knowledge while away from school. If you don’t have access to internet at home, most of our area’s libraries have internet services. Enjoy your vacation!
