Being a Good Sport

“It’s not whether you win or lose .  It’s how you play the game.”

Does your child understand the meaning behind this well-meaning saying?  Being a good sport is important in games and in life.   The summer sport scene is fast coming upon us and with it comes the opportunity to teach our children what it means to truly be a good sport.  Here are three ways you can teach sportsmanship to your youngster.

Keeping cool.  When your child loses a game or makes a mistake, try not to overreact.  Let them know that trying
their best is more important than winning or losing.  Don’t give them pointers right away.  Let some time pass before offering tips for improvement.

Avoiding comparative criticism.  If you compare your youngster to their teammates, they may feel jealous or incapable.  Instead of making a comparison, try sticking to compliments  Example: “That player sure got a good hit!” instead of, “Why can’t you hit like that?”

Playing with grace.  Whether you win or lose a game,  your child will watch your reaction.  Avoid bragging or putting down any of the participants.  Remember to congratulate the winner and to accept congratulations gracefully.

Modeling sportsmanship is the best way to teach it.

HEALTH NEWS

Over 380 kids were screened for dental health. Dental report cards were distributed at Parent Teacher conferences.  If the dental report card stated there was a defect in the primary teeth that meant there was a cavity in a baby tooth, a defect in the permanent teeth indicated a cavity in a permanent tooth, and an infectious condition indicates treatment should be provided by a dentist.  Any indication of an improper bite or space maintainer needs to be evaluated by an orthodontist.

As many of you know, there are many viruses going around right now: influenza, respiratory virus and the stomach virus.   The best way to prevent the spread of these is hand washing.  Hopefully everyone will come back from this break healthy and well.

It can be very hard to decide whether to send your child to school or to keep them home.  Some guidelines are:  if they have a temperature of 100 or above, or 99.6 with symptoms such as headache, sore throat, or stomachache; please keep them home and for 24 hours AFTER the temperature returns to normal without the aid of fever reducers.  If they have been ill with vomiting or diarrhea, please keep them home for 24 hours AFTER their last episode.  Even if they are feeling better, it takes about 24 hours to rid the body of the virus and to not be contagious to others.  You know your child better than anyone and know when they are not at their best.  Please help us keep everyone healthy.
