GHS NEWS BRIEFS...
Notes from the Nurse

Even in today’s culture of great medical cures and high-tech treatments, hand washing remains one of the most effective methods of preventing many infectious illnesses.  Our hands touch many lives, and this single, simple act can stop the spread of disease.  You should wash your hands frequently, especially after coughing, sneezing, using the restroom and before and after eating.  When warm water and soap aren’t handy, alcohol based hand sanitizers provide excellent protection and can be used frequently.  Studies have shown that viruses can survive on human hands for several hours and that they can be spread by direct contact.  Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of germs.

Steps on how to wash your hands properly

1.  Wet hands with running water.                   5.  Be sure to clean under fingernails.
2.  Pump soap into palms.                              6.  Rinse soap off of hands.
3.  Rub together to make a lather.                   7.  Dry hands thoroughly.
4.  Scrub hands vigorously for 15 seconds.      8.  Use a dry paper towel to turn water off.

Forms on File
Students must have a physical form, conflict of interest form, insurance form and activity policy signed and on file before they will be allowed to participate in sports.  Forms are available in the high school office.
Have you been contacted by our Auto-dialer system?
If your student has had any unverified absences (no parent/guardian notification), you probably have been contacted through this system.  The system begins calling at 6:00 p.m. and redials (up to 5 times) until it reaches a connection, stopping at 8:30 p.m.

Please advise the office (794-4100) of any changes to your phone number or e-mail addresses

Recycle
Help the Goddard High Science Club and  the environment by sending in old cell phones and ink jet cartridges.  A collection box is in the GHS front office.  Thanks for your support!
A reminder to all parents that Goddard High School does not have an open lunch period and all students are expected to eat lunch in the school cafeteria.  Students can only be dismissed to eat lunch out of school if his/her parent/guardian physically comes to the school and personally takes the student with them.  Your cooperation with this regulation is greatly appreciated.

The State of Kansas has established a School Safety Hotline in order to provide a means by which parents; patrons, students or school personnel can notify someone outside the school about potential problems concerning the safety of a school and the students.  The call goes through the Kansas Highway Patrol and all information is screened and then passed on to the appropriate authorities in the school and community.
SCHOOL SAFETY HOTLINE NUMBER
1-877-626-8203
To keep your student safe at GHS we will again provide police officers to help patrol the parking lot as well as monitoring our halls to maintain a safe environment. Student parking permits are required for all vehicles parked in the student lots. Permits will not be issued to drivers with an IP license. If you are in need of additional assistants, you can contact our officers through the high school office.

Electronic Devises Policy
“The possession or use of electronic devices by pupils on school property is prohibited.  This includes, but is not limited to pagers, cellular phones, headsets, music devices (iPods, MP3 players, CD players) and other equipment that has a potential to be disruptive to the educational process.  Items intended to look like or simulate such devices are also prohibited.  Devices brought to school or onto school property in violation of this policy will be seized.”

Students are asked to not bring any of these items to school.  GHS Administration appreciates your cooperation.

  • Student is not enrolled in a required class
  • Student is enrolled in a class for which he/she has already received credit
  • Student has not met prerequisites for the class he/she enrolled in
  • Student’s schedule is incomplete
  • A teacher has recommended that the student advance to a higher level class
If you have questions about your student’s schedule please contact the counselor’s office at 794-4115.

If approved the guidance department will be notified and your student will receive his/her new schedule.

Progress Reports
First quarter progress reports will be given to students Thursday, September 11th.  These reports are used primarily to alert parents of problems that a student may be having in a class.  Please contact the teacher or guidance office if you have specific questions.
Student ID Cards
All students at Goddard High School will be issued a student identification card.  This card is very important for your student to keep with them at all times.  Not only does it serve as a photo ID, it also serves as their lunch card and library card.

Students returning to GHS are asked to bring their ID card from last year (2007-2008) to use until the new card is issued in September.  New students will be issued a temporary card.

Homework Requests
When requesting homework for your student, please follow the guidelines listed below:
  • If your student knows in advance that he/she will be absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get assignments in advance from his/her teacher and for parents to notify the office of the absence.
  • If your student is ill for two or more days, he/she is eligible to receive homework for the days missed.  Please contact the office with your request, at which time the teachers are given 24 hours to process the request.

Site Council
The 1995 Kansas Legislature established that each school shall have a Site Council.  The responsibility of the Site Council shall be to provide advice and counsel in evaluating state, school district, and school site performance goals and objectives.  The council also helps determine the methods that should be employed at the school to meet those goals and objectives.  The council is to be made up of teachers, other school personnel, parents, representatives of the business community, students, and other community groups.  Other duties of the council is to offer recommendations to the principal on school rules, policies and regulations, and to keep the principal informed on issues that are on the horizon that will effect the school and students.

If you have an interest in serving on the Site Council for the high school, please contact the school by phone or in writing.  The first council meeting will be in September at which time future dates for meetings will be established.  All meetings last 1 ½ hours and are usually held in the evenings at the high school.

Student Dress Code
Parent support and cooperation in enforcing our rules is appreciated!
Goddard High School does have a dress code.  Please refer to your student’s handbook for further details.  Some of the items included are:
  1. No mesh, see-through, halter-tops, crop-tops, low-cut tops, bare-midriff tops, or any clothing with tears or holes are to be worn.  All strapped tops must have a strap of at least 1” wide.
  2. Clothing that is considered to be underwear must not be visible.
  3. Clothing that advertises alcohol, drugs, or is considered to be vulgar or in bad taste will not be allowed in the building.
  4. Clothing that allows the midriff area to show will not be allowed.
Students who wear such clothing to school will be required to change into a shirt provided through the office.  Dress code rules also apply to student dress at all school events.
Parent Volunteer
If you have an interest in volunteering at the high school in any capacity, please contact the school and let us know what you would like to do or let us know that you are available in the event that we need help with any project.  Parents can also volunteer through the Parent Teacher Organization.

Please click here for more information regarding PTO.

Student “Skip” Days
The administration of Goddard High School would like all parents to know that we do not and will not authorize what has become known as student ‘SKIP” days. Attendance at school is required everyday and students must be excused by a parent if they are absent.  We appreciate your cooperation in promoting good attendance.  It is a learned skill that carries over into the work world.
