GHS OWLS renovation project---soon you will be seeing some changes in the outdoor wildlife learning site (OWLS) on the campus of the high school.  The high school received a $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant, a $1,000 Kansas Wildlife and Parks OWLS Renovation Grant and a $500 TGIF Grant from Credit Union of America for improvements to the OWLS area.  Students conducted a control burn of the native grasses area in November then completed a winter seeding by hand casting prairie grasses and wildflower seeds.  Tool experts from Lowe’s conducted a tool safety course with the students before they built the Aldo Leopold benches.  These benches are named for Aldo Leopold, father of wildlife management, who came up with the simple design.  Ten benches are being built by the ecology students to place out into the OWLS area.  A purple martin house will also be erected in time for the annual migration of the birds to Kansas.  When spring arrives, the new native prairie interpretive gardens will be planted and signs erected to identify the plants.  The final addition will be a new floating dock extension made out of recycled materials.   This dock extension will aid in aquatic studies conducted by the students.

Goddard High School has been named Kansas Green School of the Year.   This award recognizes Kansas public and private schools that have demonstrated innovation, leadership, whole school involvement, and an integrated, holistic, sustainable approach to implementing environmental projects with a strong environmental education component into their schools. The school will be recognized at the annual KACEE and KS Dept of Health and Environment Awards Celebration in Topeka on April 9th, 2010.  An awardees banner received at this event will be hung in the main foyer.

Calling all 2012 graduates…
I am creating a video year book that will be available your graduation year- 2012! To make this a successful project, something you will have to cherish for years to come, I need pictures of your friends and you having fun. I would like pictures that portray your memories from the elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school days. Maybe it’s the first music program you were in at CDS or the winning touchdown for RGMS or the final curtain call for your musical at GHS. Whatever the memory is, I would like to capture it in the video. Please send your pictures from now until March 2012. All pictures should include a description of the event, names of the people in the picture, and a date if possible.  The pictures will not be returned, so if can’t part from them you will want to put them on a CD.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 316-519-3151 or kmccollar@goddardusd.com.

Thank you for your support,
Ms. Kristin McCollar (Dylan’s mom)

GHS NEWS BRIEFS...

GHS Receives Grant
Goddard High School is the recipient of a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant to improve the Outdoor Wildlife Learning site on the high school campus.  The $5,000 grant was provided due to the GHS’s commitment for re-establishing native habitat on our school campus to create an atmosphere of environmental awareness through hand-on educational activities outside the classroom---Renewing our relationship with the Kansas landscape through Restoration, Reconnection, and Reflection.  The grant monies will be used to help build three native prairie grasses & forbs demonstration/interpretive gardens with Leopold bench seating and installing a new floating dock system on the OWLS pond to conduct deep-water aquatic studies.  Due to the grant writing efforts of Denise Scribner, ecology/biology teacher GHS, a total of $6,500 have been granted---$500 Credit Union of America TGIF grant for building Leopold Benches, $1,000 Kansas Wildlife and Parks OWLS renovation grant and the $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant.  Ecology students will be overseeing the existing native grasses area to increase forbs (wildflower) production this month and the purple martin houses will be erected by March 1.  Watch for the final improvements in the Spring of 2010.

We apologize for this inconvenience and hope that if you have questions regarding your student’s progress in any class that you will contact the teacher by e-mail or phone. During this transition period we will be working diligently to provide you with accurate information. If you have questions, please contact the GHS office at 794-4100.

Saturday School Reminder
Parents/Guardians if your student has more than 8 absences in any of his/her classes they will need to make up that time in Saturday school. Saturday school is every Saturday (unless otherwise notified) from 8:00 am to 12:00 in the high school library. Your student must arrive by 8:00 am in order to serve Saturday school hours. If you have questions please contact your student’s administrator to discuss the issue.

Notes from the Nurse
The indication from the Center for Disease Control is that the H1N1 virus may be more of an issue than we predicted last year and the number of vaccines available may not be enough to accommodate all of our publics. Please follow these rules in preventing the spread of this virus.

Even in today’s culture of great medical cures and high-tech treatments, hand washing remains one of the most effective methods of preventing many infectious illnesses.  Our hands touch many lives, and this single, simple act can stop the spread of disease.  You should wash your hands frequently, especially after coughing, sneezing, using the restroom and before and after eating.  When warm water and soap aren’t handy, alcohol based hand sanitizers provide excellent protection and can be used frequently.  Studies have shown that viruses can survive on human hands for several hours and that they can be spread by direct contact.  Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of germs.

Steps on how to wash your hands properly

1.  Wet hands with running water.                   5.  Be sure to clean under fingernails.
2.  Pump soap into palms.                              6.  Rinse soap off of hands.
3.  Rub together to make a lather.                   7.  Dry hands thoroughly.
4.  Scrub hands vigorously for 15 seconds.      8.  Use a dry paper towel to turn water off.

Forms on File
Students must have a physical form, conflict of interest form, insurance form and activity policy signed and on file before they will be allowed to participate in sports.  Forms are available in the high school office.
Recycle
Help the Goddard High Science Club and  the environment by sending in old cell phones and ink jet cartridges.  A collection box is in the GHS front office.  Thanks for your support!
Closed Lunch
A reminder to all parents that Goddard High School does not have an open lunch period and all students are expected to eat lunch in the school cafeteria.  Students can only be dismissed to eat lunch out of school if his/her parent/guardian physically comes to the school and personally takes the student with them.  Your cooperation with this regulation is greatly appreciated.

The State of Kansas has established a School Safety Hotline in order to provide a means by which parents; patrons, students or school personnel can notify someone outside the school about potential problems concerning the safety of a school and the students.  The call goes through the Kansas Highway Patrol and all information is screened and then passed on to the appropriate authorities in the school and community.
SCHOOL SAFETY HOTLINE NUMBER
1-877-626-8203
To keep your student safe at GHS we will again provide police officers to help patrol the parking lot as well as monitoring our halls to maintain a safe environment. Student parking permits are required for all vehicles parked in the student lots. Permits will not be issued to drivers with an IP license. If you are in need of additional assistants, you can contact our officers through the high school office.

Electronic Devises Policy
BOE Approved 11/10/08
The use of cell phones / communication devices will be permitted in the hallways during student passing periods and on Mane St. during the student’s lunch period only. The use of cell phones / communication devices will not be allowed during class periods for any reason. Students are not permitted to leave class to use a cell phone or communication device. It will be considered a violation if the student’s cell phone or communication device disrupts a class.

Acceptable times for usage of electronic devices:

  • Students will be allowed to use them during passing periods, they are not allowed to be late to class as a result of “finishing a text” or any  other excuse you may be offered. If a student is tardy and still using his/her elec. device, the student will be tardy and issued an electronic device violation.
  • The classroom teacher will determine if students are allowed to use electronic device in their rooms during passing periods.
  • Students are allowed to use them during “their” lunch period while they are on Mane St. only. The walk from the lunch room back to class is NOT considered passing period.
  • Students are NOT allowed to leave class to use their phones.
  • If a phone is heard or seen out during class, it will be considered a disruption to the learning process and will be considered a violation. That includes all beeps, buzzes, rings, songs, etc etc.
  • A student taking his/her phone out to “look” at it during class is also considered a violation.
  • Students are not allowed to take out the SIM cards or batteries, this is a waste of even more class time, inform them that the administrators are not interested in reading anything in their phone! Students insisting on doing so are now “failing to comply” and will face further consequences.
Violations of this policy will carry the following consequences:
Violation 1: The student’s cell phone / communication device will be confiscated and turned into his/her administrator and the student will be required to serve a 1 hour detention before it is returned.
Violation 2: The student’s cell phone / communication device will be confiscated and turned into his/her administrator and the student will be required to serve 2 one hour detentions before it is returned.
Violation 3: The student will be assigned a 1 day In School Suspension and the cell phone / communication device will be returned after serving the ISS assignment.
Violation 4:  The student will be assigned a 3 day In-School Suspension and the cell phone / communication device will not be returned until a parent/administrator conference has been held.

Repeat Violations of this policy may result in suspension.

*Violations that occur on Friday – Student will be given the phone at the end of the day. Detention must be served Monday, or if second offense detentions served on Monday and Tuesday. Failure to do so will result in ISS.

Student ID Cards
All students at Goddard High School will be issued a student identification card.  This card is very important for your student to keep with them at all times.  Not only does it serve as a photo ID, it also serves as their lunch card and library card.

Students returning to GHS are asked to bring their ID card from last year to use until the new card is issued in September.  New students will be issued a temporary card.

Homework Requests
When requesting homework for your student, please follow the guidelines listed below:
  • If your student knows in advance that he/she will be absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get assignments in advance from his/her teacher and for parents to notify the office of the absence.

Student “Skip” Days
The administration of Goddard High School would like all parents to know that we do not and will not authorize what has become known as student ‘SKIP” days.
