Kansas Honor Flight

In a powerful connection between classroom learning and real-world experiences, sixth-grade students at Challenger Intermediate School recently had the opportunity to interview a veteran from the Kansas Honor Flight program, bringing their social emotional lessons on courage into sharp focus.

After studying the concept of courage in their social studies classes, the students took their learning beyond the classroom by preparing thoughtful questions for their special guest. The veteran shared personal stories of bravery, sacrifice, and resilience that captivated the young audience and provided authentic insights.

Throughout the interview, the sixth graders demonstrated exceptional empathy, curiosity, and respect—qualities their teachers noted with pride. Students listened attentively and engaged meaningfully with their guest, asking insightful questions that reflected their genuine interest in understanding the veteran's experiences.

The Kansas Honor Flight program, which honors veterans by transporting them to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials dedicated to their service, has been committed to this project for the last three years. This collaboration gives students the chance to learn directly from those who have served our country while allowing veterans to share their stories with younger generations.
