The USD 265 - Goddard Public Schools Transportation Department delivered an outstanding performance at the 55th Annual Kansas State Pupil Transportation Association (KSPTA) Safe Driving Competition, not only demonstrating their exceptional driving skills but also proving their capabilities as gracious hosts. On June 4th, Goddard High School served as the backdrop for this prestigious statewide event, where more than 75 of Kansas's finest school bus drivers gathered to showcase the critical skills they use daily to transport students safely across the state's 23 million annual miles of student transportation routes.
The competition results spoke volumes about the quality and dedication of Goddard's transportation team. In a remarkable display of skill and preparation, Goddard drivers dominated multiple categories, with Alisha Ralstin and Aaron Mathews claiming 1st and 2nd place respectively in the “Mini Bus - Rookie” category, while Neil Swenson and Andrew Pfannenstiel secured 1st and 2nd place in the “Transit Bus - Rookie” category. Seasoned drivers Kristy Evers and Taunya Terhune also earned recognition with 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the “Transit Bus - Experienced” category, demonstrating the depth of talent across all experience levels within the department.
The pinnacle of Goddard's success came with their recognition as the “Top Team at the State Competition” - an honor based on the combined scores of their top three drivers across the driving course, written exam, and surprise inspection components. This achievement highlighted the comprehensive excellence of drivers Taunya Terhune, Kristy Evers, and Neil Swenson whose combined performance represented the best of what Kansas school transportation has to offer. The award reflects not just individual skill, but the collaborative spirit and shared commitment to excellence that defines Goddard's transportation culture.
Beyond their competitive success, USD 265 Transportation’s leadership within the state transportation community was further recognized through significant organizational roles. Dwane Scheidt's election as one of the Central Region Representatives on the KSPTA board, and Nina Gracy's election as the new KSPTA Secretary, demonstrate the respect and trust that this team of professionals have earned among their peers statewide. These leadership positions will allow Goddard to continue influencing best practices and safety standards across Kansas's school transportation network.
The seamless execution of hosting duties showcased Goddard's organizational capabilities and community spirit. From the early morning setup at 7:00 a.m. through the 6:30 p.m. conclusion, the event ran smoothly thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple departments. The assistance of the USD 265 Maintenance Team with course setup, the District Administrative Team's early morning support for competitors, and Goddard High School's gracious accommodation of the event on their campus all contributed to a successful competition that honored the state's transportation professionals.
This remarkable achievement reinforces what our #265Family has long known - that our Transportation Department represents the gold standard for school bus operations in Kansas. With 67 dedicated drivers covering over 649,000 miles annually through regular routes, special education services, and activity trips, these professionals do far more than simply drive buses. They serve as the first and last positive contact students have each school day, building relationships, ensuring safety, and contributing to each child's educational journey. Their success at the state competition serves as a testament to their year-round dedication, countless hours of practice, and unwavering commitment to excellence in student transportation.
