What a wonderful evening! Our talented students at Discovery Intermediate School took the spotlight at their very first Orchestra "Informance," and what an inspiring kickoff to the fine arts calendar! Big thanks to parent‐volunteer photographer Jamie Green for capturing over 25 beautiful moments that tell the story of our budding musicians in action.
From the opening measure to the final bow, the night was a celebration of sound and collaboration. Our intermediate orchestra students demonstrated not only technical growth, but also the confidence and joy that flourish when students are given the space to explore music. As Goddard Public Schools’ Strategic Plan reminds us: “We believe the district must provide a safe, caring, and connected learning environment to educate the whole child—academically, physically, and socially.” This evening of music beautifully aligns with that vision, fine arts helping students grow in all those dimensions.
“Our students came together tonight and showed how music can bring us closer—each note, each bow stroke, each shared rhythm speaks to the power of community,” said Principal Luke Smith. “I’m so proud of our orchestra students under Ms. Lawson's leadership, and excited for the growth ahead.”
Why are the fine arts so important for our students? Because participation in programs like orchestra teaches discipline, teamwork, active listening, creativity, dedication, and self‐expression. It gives students a voice, literally and figuratively, and helps them build confidence beyond the classroom. It supports the whole child as the Strategic Plan directs: offering opportunities beyond just academics, nurturing skills for lifelong success.
Orchestra teacher Pam Lawson added, “Watching these young musicians step onto the stage for the first time is one of the great joys of teaching. They’re not only learning their instruments, they’re learning to listen to each other, to the conductor, to the piece. And that learning extends far beyond music and into their lifelong success.”
The concert also served as a behind‐the‐scenes introduction for families: what to expect in rehearsals, the instrument rental process, the commitment of practice, and the joy of performance. By building that connection early, Discovery Intermediate is living out the Strategic Plan’s call to engage and develop programs that support student learning opportunities beyond the traditional school day.
Thank you to every student who participated, every family who cheered, and Jamie Green for capturing those priceless memories. Here’s to many more concerts, growth, and vibrant music‐making ahead this season.
