Congratulations to Sarah Ashcraft, Music Teacher at Apollo Elementary School, and one of two district nominees representing USD 265 - Goddard Public Schools for Kansas Teacher of the Year (KTOY). This award honors exemplary educators, at the elementary and secondary levels, who go above and beyond in their classrooms and school communities to cultivate and foster a caring and connected learning environment for students.

The mission of this Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) program is to build and utilize a network of exemplary teachers who are leaders in the improvement of schools, student performance, and the teaching profession. Ashcraft is a fantastic example of that, in our #265Family, and someone who always puts the needs of the students first.

Ashcraft was nominated, in part, by Apollo Principal, Connor Christensen, who had this to share, “I have the privilege of witnessing daily how Mrs. Ashcraft’s vision, pedagogy, and commitment to accessibility transform the lives of our 500+ students on a daily basis. Having taught since 2006, her dedication to music education has positively impacted thousands of students throughout her distinguished career.”

He continued, “Mrs. Ashcraft’s core philosophy is simple yet profound: all people are musical, and talent can be inspired and developed within a supportive, structured environment. What sets Sarah apart is how she turns this philosophy into daily practice by intentionally removing barriers to learning. Because of her innovative spirit, all 500+ students leave her classroom feeling successful, capable, and empowered. Her efforts directly shape our school culture, modeling how tailored interventions benefit the entire student body. Sarah Ashcraft exemplifies the very best of public education. She gives students lifelong skills, confidence, and a deep sense of belonging that they carry with them long after leaving Apollo.”

Denise Archer, Science Teacher at Apollo Elementary School, recommended Ashcraft for this award enthusiastically, sharing, “As a fellow educator who works closely with her, I witness firsthand the profound impact Sarah has on our school community. She is a visionary educator who transforms the music room into a launchpad for lifelong creativity, innovation, and joy. Walking past Sarah’s classroom is always an adventure. She rejects the traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to music education, choosing instead to pioneer an innovative curriculum that engages every style of learner.”

Children in a classroom raise their hands eagerly from tiered black steps, while adults sit nearby; colorful science posters create an upbeat, engaged learning atmosphere.

Thank you, Mrs. Ashcraft, for all that you have done and will continue to do to educate our #265Family for lifelong success!
